Categorizing photography is controversial. For example, the category of ‘photojournalism’, in my opinion, is an exceedingly narrow definition. It traditionally demanded that photography be defined as close to events as they unfolded avoiding interpretation. When I started working with GEO in the 70’s, it meant something extremely narrow and factual, and today we might, perhaps, call it ’hard news’. It was then solely defined in terms of factual parameters. Magnum photographers were the exception to the rule. They each saw the world with their own eyes.

I believe that now, a more interpretative, personal photography is seen in documentary photography. For example, we have chosen 5 images by Richard Mosse, still lives of the borders in the American side of Mexico. They are, without doubt, documentary photographs. Alongside Richard we show Shaul Schwarz’s work. He worked extensively on ‘Narcos’ in Mexico. Shaul’s work is hardcore journalistic, yet he has a unified vision in his documentary photography. At the New York Photo Festival, these two photographers will be exhibited side by side in one room to show how they are close in terms of subject yet radically different in terms of their visual interpretation.

Documentary Photography nowadays is more inclusive than exclusive, and it can go from portraiture to fine art to landscape and still life. There definitely is room for interpretation. Some people see it with a much narrower perspective. In my opinion, a photographer is documenting events in a broad sense. It can go from merely showing what is there to interpreting it in a highly personalized way.

Kira Pollack: Speed. In the digital world, the speed and the demand for speed that stories need to be communicated—and published—is astronomical. The most critical thing that we can do as editors is to be as thoughtful as possible in response to that speed. We need to get the images published as quickly as possible, but with journalistic integrity.

Of this series ‘Last Meals‘, he writes, ‘The series visually documents the face and last meal of convicted killers. I created this project to explore the interesting and unique relationship humans have with food and used the last meal as a metaphor to raise questions about the death penalty. In 2010 this photo essay traveled to Singapore to be shown in the Singapore Fringe Festival: Art and the Law. Ironically, Singapore has an extremely strict death penalty stance and I was informed that it is part of school curriculum to watch an execution take place. This is an ongoing project and I am currently researching publishers to make this into a photo book’.

Lenclos creates 3D online experiences of actual events, through the interplay of photos and video interviews, all set in an evocative 3D representation of the event’s environment. Soon after an event begins, a virtual version is launched, which those interested can then visit and explore, both contemporaneous with those attending the event live, or at any point thereafter. The rendered 3D world immerses visitors in the environment of the event, and vastly expands the number of people who can experience it.

While some have described, in hyperbolic fashion, the death of photography… I see rather a birth and a new definition forming, an expansion on previous ideas… a birth occurring that brings with it a new world in a sense, a massive frontier and a new sort of beginning… of new possibilities and new “tools”… and new way of using them and a new way of abusing them. The old is becoming renewed and fresh while “the new” is then already becoming a bit old and dull. We are looking forward yet looking freshly backwards on an unprecedented scale. The past and the present are co-mingling at such a rapid pace as to give one chills… if one can see it.

We see hundreds of projects a month. There are scores of stories on Gaza, African immigrants in Europe, and drug/gang violence in Latin America, Which doesn’t mean that these are not important subjects. It just means that to get attention it has to have a different approach or style. It’s exciting when we see a well-photographed story on a subject that we haven’t seen before.

When Marco Baroncini said he wanted to show us his black and white photographs of the Roma (gypsies) in Rome, we told him that the bar on black and white photos of gypsies was very high. It had to be at least half as good as Koudelka’s work. To our great surprise it was wonderful and Lens published it.

We particularly want to encourage people to photograph their own communities rather than traveling abroad for professional recognition and legitimacy.

The key for photographers today is that they must be idea people. Concept people. It is no longer any advantage to have technical skills. Today one needs idea skills, to really have something to say, either journalistically or artistically. I see photography as a language far, far from dead. In my opinion, just being born. I look for visual literacy in a body of work. The makers must be visually literate and the audience must be visually literate as well. Seeking this happy medium of literacy from creator to audience is a full time preoccupation that will never end. However, the pursuit of this ideal is in and of itself an art.

IA: Since photography in Latin America encompasses all types of aesthetics including documentary, conceptual and experimental formats, among others, heterogeneity is probably its only unifying element. What is clear to me is that Latin American photography moves in multiple ways; in some instances the works reflect the contextual realities of their site production while in others they reference global issues. Certainly Latin American Photography today does have a multicultural character and moves beyond local artistic circuits.
