Welcome to In Studio On Location.

This blog came about when three things happened. First, seeing many photographer’s personal blogs, inspired by food bloggers and a conversation with our first photographer on a studio visit. Thus, in studio on location was born.

I hope this blog can inspire people starting out as well as people who have been in the business for years. Please leave comments or questions about anything related to photography. I’ll do my best to answer, or get the photographer to respond.

    Thank you,

    Nicole Radja

  • I found this explanation of the three song rule for live music photographers interesting and if you read the rest of the interview you’ll see how he’s recently got out of it. Photo editor Nicole Radja interviews Chicago music photographer Paul Natkin on her blog called“In Studio On Location.”

In a sense, Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans is another expression of the status of the work. If you want to find out about its photographer and history (and a lot of other things) this is where you want to look.

I have always wanted to photograph a full moon behind our giant neon globe.

The likely closure of this newspaper, last night’s full moon, the clear sky and a serious need for some solitude on the water prompted me to finally make that happen.

I confess to being a workaholic. And as movies always take up a year or two of your life, I’m happiest filling some of the time in between taking pictures.

Barbara Crane for obvious (and not so obvious) reasons, is one of the few working photographers who can honestly be compared to Harry Callahan. Among the near-endless virtues of Callahan as a photographer was his quest to explore the plastic picture possibilities of camera-made photographs — a cornerstone of Crane’s own distinguished career.

I’ve been shooting for some time now with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (aka Leica D-Lux 4, more or less). I’ve come to think that it’s overall the best small camera I’ve ever used.

The Phase One P65+ currently has bragging rights as the world’s highest resolution digital back for medium format cameras. As we’ll see though there’s more to the back’s goodness than just high resolution.

A well shot 16 bit 60 Megapixel frame is quite something to work with. The level of detail is astonishing – beyond anything most people have seen, except maybe from a large format scanning back. Prints that are 22″ X 30″ are easily made, and even larger ones are quite possible.
