    5B4: Capitolio by Christopher Anderson:

Early into Christopher Anderson’s Capitolio we are faced with a horned demon exorcised by a cross held aloft over its head. It is this one image which metaphorically sums up the presidency of Hugo Chavez and the polarized nation of Venezuela. The poor tend to see Chavez as a saint while the wealthy few – the four hundred year old elite – paint him as the anti-Christ.

Mark Klett – Time Studies « The PhotoBook:

Klett has tapped into the earlier photographic processes to explore the element of time by extending the duration of his exposures. He effective uses two variations, an extended long exposure to constant capture the light and a series of intermittent exposures over an extended period of time. To me, the process is like creating some mysterious treasures, because you can not always foretell what the final results will appear like. With time and practice, you can kinda guess approximately what the resulting image might look like, but you can never tell with absolute certainty.

Don’t Fence Me In » THE WILD WEIRD WORLD OF SPORTS:

When mixed martial arts first came onto the scene, I didn’t care. I’d see signs along I-5 or ads in the Willamette Week for cage fighting, but I could never get excited. Perhaps it was shooting low-budget pro wrestling at dim armories in the past that turned me off. Not sure. Or thinking, “It’s not going anywhere. I’ll get that another time.” Well, that time has come in a big way.

UFC 102 hit Portland this past weekend and – thanks in large part to buddy Chris Ryan – I was able to secure a spot ring side.

  • Ara Oshagan – father:land | burn magazine:

My father died in June 2000.

A few years before that, he and I decided to embark on a project about Karabagh: a remote mountainous area next to Armenia. A region where the Armenians fought and won a fierce war of independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. A region still with militarized borders and no political recognition. A place in transformation: the people, the land, the very way of life in political, social, existential upheaval. A place that is part of our distant homeland.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Ami Vitale’s Beautiful Cultures and Powerful Documentary | the adventure life:

Of course photojournalism is important but it has always been a struggle to find support even since I began. Just because magazines and newspapers are going through a difficult period does not reduce the need for great storytelling and I believe now is a perfect time to find opportunity and recreate ourselves for other mediums. I feel it’s a glorious time for photojournalism and story telling. Our medium is changing and the new opportunities are out there but take a little more work to find. I don’t understand why everyone is afraid of change, the same thing happened to radio years ago. Everyone said it was dead. Photography is not dead and if we can harness all the creativity and tools available to us, we can make some amazing work and deliver it to audiences we never dreamt of reaching before. I see this as an empowering and exciting time.
