Visual Diary: Shooting by Car in Kandahar

Christoph Bangert shares photographs from his recent reporting trip to Kandahar, perhaps some of the last photos to be taken by a Western photographer in the city, which is bracing for a major offensive in the coming months.

Despite the seeming normalcy, it was still considered to be too dangerous for a Western photographer like me to work openly in the streets as my colleague Tyler Hicks had been able to do only five months earlier.

The resulting pictures that I took from a local car traveling in the center and on the outskirts of Kandahar are only a glimpse or mere impression of Kandahar before the upcoming battle, but they may well be some of the last images by a Western photographer taken in this city unilaterally for a long time.
