Manhattan’s predominant grid system gives way to thousands of crosswalks or crossings. It was whilst being stood at one that I began to frequently notice a palpable tension; not just as an observer, but as a full participant. People are generally stopped in their tracks or funneled by the process of elapsing time into rushing, sometimes risking. Either way, a special relationship seems to exist between time and space at the crosswalk.
