There is a strong rumor that Nikon, Canon and Sony are developing mirror-less compact cameras with APS-C sensor sizes. The Leica X1 foreshadows this development. For Leica the X1 is a bold step and this could be a very promising one, but only when the camera offers interchangeable lenses and a redesigned set of functions. One could even imagine a digital CL with the M8 sensor size.

I don’t remember how I first met Isaac McKay-Randozzi, but it feels like it was a very long time ago. Mentally, I associate him with: film, black/white, and skateboarding.

The rise of the camera-phone
Everywhere you go these days, there are people with camera-phones – many of us record, document, and upload the minutae of our lives. But, ultimately, should we be doing it just because we can?

As more and more layoffs around the country are announced, I’ve been increasingly asked for advice on how to start out and succeed at freelancing. It’s a logical segue right out of the gate because for the most part it’s mainly editorial and they’ll be in their comfort zone before moving on to other arenas of photography. The first thing out of my mouth every time is that you have GOT to be patient in every single facet of the business.

The reason was because the image showed Arenas at a game, pretending to shoot some teammates. They were laughing. But now that Arenas has been suspended indefinitely for allegedly pulling out a real gun during a locker room dispute, the image presents a publicity problem for the NBA.

LUCEO and MJR announced their group show entitled ‘Make-Do’ with an opening night on January 21, 2010. The show will feature a limited edition fine-art print publication distributed to the first 200 attendees. Large-scale reproductions of the publication pages will be displayed on the gallery walls.
Where: 25CPW
When: Thursday, January 21, 2010Time: 6-10pm
Address: 25 Central Park West at the intersection of 62nd street.About the show:
MJR and Luceo are photography groups determined to Make-Do with an industry in transition. This publication is part of a larger vision to strengthen independent platforms for expression and collaboration.Editorial by Gillian Tozer:
The role of the documentary photographer has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. No longer emblazoned in funding and dispatched to remote surroundings adjacent to ‘the action’, the photojournalist must now explore their own environment. This exploration of the familiar is perhaps what best aligns the two photography collectives of MJR and LUCEO. Issue One of Make-Do captures the cultural struggle within America as it embraces a ‘new’ era of change while desperately clinging to that which made it solid. Among the degradation and disarray, there are traditions, habits and memories that call out to be salvaged. What you will witness is a dialogue between the America that was and the America that is now. For those working outside of America the same theme pervades. This collection documents the youthful and local meanderings of each photographer. While each series is strikingly different to the next, what remains ubiquitous is a sense of stoicism in the face of an inescapable and united collapse. This subject of human resilience is not uncommon to photojournalism, but it is never cumbersome, nor can be disregarded due to the warmth and significance it emanates. These are everyday, fleeting moments, often stumbled upon, now marked in print.Link: Make-Do: An Opening Featuring Luceo & MJR, Jan. 21 6-10pm | Luceo Images

Great to see a newspaper fighting for its rights, especially when so many news organizations are just fighting for their survival. John Tully, a photographer for the Midland Daily News in Midland, Michigan, USA, was standing on a public roadway while covering a breaking fire at a Dow Corning (wiki) plant when he was approached first by Dow Corning security personnel and then by Midland Police officers at the end of October, 2009.
