Modernist Forms & Monochrome Tones – The Leica Camera Blog

Having started out making skateboarding videos in LA in the late 90s, Fred Mortagne then discovered his passion for black and white photography. During his recent exhibition at the MIMPI film festival in Rio de Janeiro, Fred found time to rekindle his love for modernist architecture and, in particular, the work of his hero, Oscar Niemeyer, with the following images shot over the course of a week with the Leica M Monochrom Typ 246.

Most skateboard photography is hyper-focused on the technical details and the action of a trick, but French photographer Fred Mortagne (more commonly known by his nickname French Fred) isn’t most photographers. In his first book, Attraper Au Vol, which roughly translates to To Catch in the Air, Mortagne takes a wide view of skateboarding and the culture that surrounds it.

Renowned skateboarding film-maker and photographer, Fred Mortagne, alias French Fred, set out to capture this urban sport with the new Leica SL. Shooting on location at the industrial canals and concrete bed of the Los Angeles River he staged the Element skateboard team with Nick Garcia, Nassim Guammaz, Alex Lawton, Dominick Walkera and Brandon Westgate.

The internationally renowned skateboarding filmmaker and cameraman, Fred Mortagne – a.k.a FrenchFred – shares in this two part series a selection of images taken with a Monochrom in Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon,  Lyon, among others. He also shares his thoughts on his career and the evolution of this urban culture that he has been part of for over 30 years now. This work is presented as part of the Red Bull Illume competition, which Fred Mortagne was a winner of during its first edition in 2007, and which Leica is a partner of this year.
