Simple Life Among the Hutterites

Tim Smith was looking for a day picture when a quick glimpse of Hutterite women led him to pursue a project about their simple, communal life.

When it comes to feature photos, the more you drive the luckier you’ll get. Tim Smith learned that lesson one crisp spring day in 2009, when he was searching for something — anything — worth photographing. He needed to find a day picture to fill space on the pages of the Brandon Sun newspaper in Manitoba, Canada. Unfortunately, nothing much was happening in his corner of western Manitoba.

Edmonton Sun photo editor Tom Braid couldn’t be prouder of his staff.

“I’m just proud to be part of the team,” Braid said yesterday after Sun shooters walked off with an armload of hardware at the News Photographers Association of Canada’s second annual national pictures of the year awards in Vancouver.

Jason Franson won first place in Feature/Enterprise category for his entry entitled “Swinging soldier.” Colleague Darryl Dyck placed second in the category with “Trees and skaters” and Tim Smith earned honourable mention for “Swimmer.”
