‘Photographer’ Isn’t About Photography at All

National Geographic’s new show, “Photographer,” doesn’t bother itself with analyzing images. It’s all about the drive it takes to find the ideal shot.

via WIRED: https://www.wired.com/story/national-geographic-photographer-docuseries/

Don’t be fooled, National Geographic’s new series Photographer isn’t about analyzing images. Talk of lighting, depth of field, and good angles is minimal. Instead, it’s an examination of what compels a person to do whatever it takes to get the perfect shot. They “work hard to the point of death,” says fashion photographer Campbell Addy, and Photographer aims to illustrate why.

‘War criminals: whatever you do, we’ll record it’: the ‘merciless’ Ukrainian film about Mariupol

20 Days in Mariupol by Mstyslav Chernov traces the Russian siege of the port in harrowing detail. Here, he discusses his documentary with a fellow war reporter

via the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/11/ukrainian-film-20-days-in-mariupol-mstyslav-chernov-documentary

It is a brave, visceral, merciless masterpiece. I’ll stake a claim, for what it’s worth: after decades of war reporting, and watching hundreds of films about war, there are few, if any, like this. Chernov’s film documents Russia’s shocking war crimes against Mariupol on a vast, epic scale, in counterpoint to detail so intimate it borders on unbearable, as it should.

The Documentary World’s Identity Crisis

The boom — or glut — in streaming documentaries has sparked a reckoning among filmmakers and their subjects.

via Vulture: https://www.vulture.com/article/tv-documentaries-ethical-standards.html

Documentary-making has never been ethically pure or entirely subjective. (“I’m working on a project that is the kind of documentary where you do six takes of the person putting a boat in the water to get the right one,” one editor told me.) Every shot and every cut is a choice, and even its practitioners have never agreed on whether the medium is closer to journalism or to cinema. One of the earliest popular documentaries, Robert Flaherty’s 1922 film, Nanook of the North, was about a man supposedly living in the Canadian tundra, untouched by the wider world — and it was full of lies. Nanook’s real name was Allakariallak. His wife in the film wasn’t his wife. (She was, according to another local, one of Flaherty’s multiple wives.) Allakariallak hunted with a gun, but that didn’t fit the story Flaherty wanted to tell, so the director asked him to use a harpoon. In defense of his methods, Flaherty said, “One often has to distort a thing in order to catch its true spirit.”
