This year, we decided that Visa would not to exhibit World Press Photo. We are a photojournalism festival and we take pride in exhibiting images that have been produced honestly. This is not to say I don’t respect Lars or World Press Photo. My intent here was originally to write a whole long treatise on Jean-François Leroy. But I skipped that idea. He is of course the progenitor of Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, France. 25 years worth of photojournalism based exhibitions, lectures, seminars, and workshops. Cafe La Poste, a local bar and sidewalk cafe, is where it all comes together for discussion after a Jean-François hosted super projected evening slideshow of the work of some of the world’s greats.

Jean-François Leroy launched Visa Pour l’Image, the international photojournalism festival, in Perpignan in 1989. Before heading up the festival, Leroy was shooting reportage for the agency Sipa Press and also working for Photo-Reporter, Le Photographe, Photo-Revue and Photo Magazine. He is the chairman of the company Images Evidence. Anne-Celine Jaeger, author of Image Makers, Image Takers, spoke to Leroy about the festival, photographic talent and journalism as it stands today.

Mr Leroy complains that duckrabbit has ‘slandered‘ both himself and the photographers who appeared at the festival. Of course technically it’s not possible to ‘slander’ Mr Leroy because slander is spoken, not written, but I think we can all get his point. You can be the judge of whether this debate was worth having and whether, given the evidence and opinion presented both by duckrabbit and Mr Leroy, our response to the attack on Morel was justified.
Journalism is dependent on asking questions. It was not duckrabbit but William Klein who suggested that Visa resembles ‘a festival of shanty towns without context.’

Might that have something to do with upholding a logic that many people find is at odds with your self stated remit of ‘defending professional photographers’?
