Photojournalism is at a crisis point. A once trusted and venerable calling, journalists are now held at their lowest esteem in history. Why? I can answer that in one word…TRUST!

It was stated that over 20% of the finalists were “disqualified” for manipulation of some sort. Again, Kudos for making a stand. But without showing examples or defining exactly what was done that was considered egregious, you have actually done a disservice to the photographic community.

A piece of me will also die with that last issue. Of all the places I have worked in my career, never was there an organization filled with more talent than at Newsweek. I had the great honor of working for some of the finest editors, writers and journalists…anywhere…hands down!

In Focus – Q&A with Photo Editor Jim Colton

In Focus - Q&A with Photo Editor Jim Colton - The Photo Brigade

In his new column “In Focus”, Alex Federowicz interviews successful photo editors and industry leaders. In this Q&A, Alex speaks with legendary photo editor Jim Colton and discusses his career and what makes a great image.

via The Photo Brigade: http://thephotobrigade.com/2012/09/in-focus-qa-with-photo-editor-jim-colton/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThePhotoBrigade+%28The+Photo+Brigade%29

As far as images having the same impact in the past, I firmly believe they still do. When the right pictures meet the right audience, great things can happen. As a caveat though, with all the new media being used (more on that later) we see some frivolity as well. Eg: The school bus attendant that was being harassed by teenagers seen by over 8 million people on You Tube resulting in people donating close to a quarter of a million dollars for her “vacation.” WTF?

TIME of course paid more. They always had more budget than Newsweek. As my friend Jimmy Colton, then an editor at NW and now at SI, was fond of saying, “TIME is a hospital. Newsweek’s a MASH unit.” Below is the first cover I shot for TIME, and if I recall, they paid about 3 grand. Other shooters, the real premier cover guys, got more dough, for sure. I was definitely not in that group. If I got a cover, it was either an accident or a last ditch phone call by a desperate editor.
