Before Fred Baldwin and Wendy Watriss became chroniclers of American rural life and inspired generations of photographers and scores of photo festivals around the world, there had to be a beginning.

So how did their partnership start?

“With a torrid affair,” Fred said.

“It was the end of the ’60s,” Wendy added, with a smile and a shrug.
