Africa endures in the language and customs of the Gullah people, descendants of slaves who have lived along the Carolina coast for generations, sustaining themselves through the land and water. Pete Marovich, who grew up in South Carolina aware of this distinctive culture, wanted to photograph these communities, so about a decade ago he pitched the idea to a magazine editor.
