The contradictions of religion in Latin America have long fascinated Mauricio Toro-Goya. The Chilean photographer has devoted much of his attention to producing ambrotypes that offer unsettling tableaux about events and attitudes in a region that, on the one hand, is deeply religious, yet has also been the setting for merciless political violence and harsh economic reforms.
