Crossing Rivers, Searching for the Future

In a photograph taken by Nick Oza, the Suchiate appears at once shallow and daunting. A solitary figure wades across, belongings held aloft with one arm, the other arm flailing in an attempt to keep balance, as if reminding us that so many voyages of peril involve crossings of rivers, natural boundaries forged long before they appeared on our maps.
