Chloe Dewe Mathews Named 2014 Gardner Fellow By Harvard’s Peabody Museum | PDNPulse

British photographer Chloe Dewe Mathews was named the 2014 Robert Gardner Photography Fellow by Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, the museum announced earlier this week. The documentary photography fellowship provides a stipend of $50,0

During her fellowship, Mathews, who is represented by Panos Pictures, will continue her series on the Caspian region, which she began in 2010 and which included her look at an Azerbaijani city, Naftalan, famous for petroleum-based therapeutic treatments

Yesterday, I linked to a BagNews post about the accuracy of an award-winning photo by Magnum's Paolo Pellegrin. Since then, Paolo has responded (weakly, in my estimation) and a number of sites have leapt to his defense.

Chloe Dewe Mathews: China's Wild West

China’s Wild West is an acerbic and provocative series of photographs by Chloe Dewe Mathews focussing on the contested lives of a sparse populace in China’s Xinjiang region. There is a state of suspension in some of the photos when the viewer begins to question what it is they are actually looking at, asking whether some post manipulation has been employed. But there is none and such clever stop-in-your-tracks devices only add to the underlying narrative of the people that Mathews captures – their story being one of surveillance, suppression and discrimination.
