But on July 1, Ruth Fremson embarked on her first road trip from east to west, heading for Seattle, where she will be based for the next three months. The experience of getting behind the wheel and driving — and driving, and driving — has changed how she sees the United States.
As a photojournalist, Ruth Fremson has witnessed a lot of suffering. Does it affect her? Of course, it does.
Ruth Fremson has seen a great deal of war, disaster and poverty. To be able to depict suffering, photographers have to step back and observe, holding themselves a bit apart from the situation — if they can — for just a moment or two. That doesn’t mean, however, that their own emotions can simply be shelved.
