Listen to this really wonderful 18 minute interview with photographer Roy DeCarava on Fresh Air from 1996. DeCarava died October 27 at age 89. What a soulful, sweet, articulate man.

Brian Ach created “The Photographer Project” to raise money for fellow celebrity and entertainment photographer Paul Hawthorne, who fell ill in Fall 2008 with amyloidosis, a rare disease. The idea was to pull New York City-based celebrity photographers who regularly work the red carpet rope lines, event photographers and paparazzi into his Brooklyn studio for full length portraits, which Ach would turn into a book to benefit his friend.

The Travel Photographer Of The Year has announced the winners of its 2009 competition. Travel Photographer of the Year 2009 was awarded to G.M.B. Akash, an award-winning and well-known photographer from Bangladesh, who was unanimously voted as the outstanding entrant in the 2009 awards by the judging panel for his vibrant photographs.

I ran into Larry a couple of other times over the years. In Munich we were in a group show together. We cracked jokes during a long press conference in which neither of us understood a word being said. We also talked about photography. Larry was incredibly smart about the medium. I’ve always said that there is nobody whom I’d rather have had the chance to study under.

The focus of the assignment was ritual. But ritualism on the water for these stoic men is not easily seen. It’s subtle. I found tidbits here and there.—a pirate tattoo that one man would add to on trips back to land, a man who would smoke a joint every time he docked and one fisherman who told me he’d rather die than not fish. “It’s like therapy,” he said. “It’s better than sex.” After those words of wisdom, I knew I had found something special. Photography, I thought, is the perfect medium to capture this subtle ritualistic nature of fishing.

1DmkIV – Singapore night drive from Dan Chung on Vimeo.
This is my second shoot using the pre-production 1DmkIV on loan to me from Canon Singapore. I chose to make this one a bit more like a conventional piece you might find on a news website’s feature pages. Setting myself a one evening time limit on getting the shoot done we filmed everything in about 4 hours. The star of the show is 28 year old Marvin who spends all his money on a Mercedes SLK to drive around Singapore in, mostly cruising with his friends at night.

This year’s winner is without question amusing — not to mention embarrassing for the news organization the published it — in that it demonstrates a certain amount of cultural/musical ignorance. But it earns Correction of the Year honors because of what happened after it was published. This Washington Post correction inspired an amusing Twitter hashtag, which saw people come together to come up with imagined corrections. It’s Correction of the Year because it communicates that people notice and care about corrections, and because it demonstrates the participatory potential being unleashed by the Internet.
We really need to avoid treating the artistic choice of print size just like any other fad.
