The first (and only) time I went to the New Museum, and of course I was snapping some photos with my little digital camera (mind you, not of the utterly forgettable art on display, but of the building). A “security” guard approached me and told me “You can’t take pictures here,” and I almost responded “Oh yeah? I just did.”

“The good news for photography is that our editor, Robert Thomson, is a very visual person,” says Jack Van Antwerp, the paper’s photography director.
The WSJ shoots substantially more original photography than before Murdoch took over. “A lot of the stuff needs to be assigned, because we’re breaking the story or it’s a unique angle on it,” Van Antwerp says.

The ability to roll with the punches (quickly) and diplomatically allows these veteran photographers to get the best out of their subjects and succeed when a high-pressure shoot turns difficult. Here they discuss their experiences creating great portraits in tough situations.

I’m a sucker for self portraits…not my own, but other people’s and Gariela Herman’s are quite engaging. All of her work is imbued with a feeling of joy, a feeling of why-not, and a sense that she is happily exploring the world around her.

When Canon Singapore contacted me to see if I wanted to test drive a pre-productin shiny new Canon 1DmkIV I jumped at the chance. Up till now I’ve had to lay down my own cash to try the 5DmkII and 7D so this was a great opportunity to form an opinion about the camera without going bankrupt and I was due to be in Singapore anyway for an event at Cathay Photo. I had a few days to really put the camera through it paces shooting mainly at night to see if it lived up to the hype. I’m glad to say that the short answer is that it does and its low light video is truly stellar, easily beating my 5DmkII and 7D.

as I get older I am getting a bit lazier, and while as little as five years ago I’d think nothing of hiking all afternoon with a 30lb camera pack, along with a heavy tripod and ball head on a shoulder sling, not so much anymore.
