The book, “China Safari: On the Trail of Beijing’s Expansion in Africa,” documents the more than 500,000 people from China who have immigrated to Africa.
As many as 500,000 Chinese have immigrated to Africa, lured by its oil, copper, uranium, wood and other natural resources. Many have thrived, creating large conglomerates. To serve them, other entrepreneurs have opened palatial restaurants. Or karaoke halls. The infusion of a distinctly different culture into African society — again — is turning out to be a critical chapter in the continent’s post-colonial history.
This is a big story. And it was the toughest story that the photographer Paolo Woods has ever pursued.
Every decade has its photo-cliches. Back in the 80s we had the tobacco-grad, which would turn skies a smoky orange-brown. We also had the starburst filter which would add a cheesy sparkle to any highlights, just like the visual “ting!” in a toothpaste ad.
The “Bokehtinator” works by shaping the aperture through which the light enters the lens. Bokeh can be “tuned” by lens makers by altering the shape of the aperture blades inside the lens. The Bokehtinator does the same thing, only it does it while secured to the outside of the lens by a rubber band. The perforated plastic plates slip into this holder and add all manner of naff shapes to your pictures.

Rubenstein previously worked as a contract and freelance photographer for the Oregonian in Portland, Oregon. Rubenstein has an environmental studies degree from Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona and studied photojournalism in the graduate program at Ohio University.

Basford, who had taken his camera, interviewed Rensberger once he was in custody. The officer asked him why he’d taken a photograph of a girl still on his camera. The photo is of a choir in the Town Center Mall. It was taken from the second floor of the mall, looking down. A figure is sitting, watching the choir in the bottom left of the frame.
“I’m not even sure it’s a little girl,” Rensberger said. “I said, ‘I didn’t know it was against the law to take a picture of an officer in uniform.’ He [Basford] said, ‘It’s not against the law to take a picture of a police officer unless they don’t want you to.’”

I do think, however, that over the past few years the quality aspect of photo books has also been taken an extreme, which sometimes makes it seem as if photo books are some sort of fetish. If I had the choice between Alec Soth’s newpaper and a Karl Lagerfeld book printed by Steidl, it’s obvious I’d pick Alec’s newspaper
