Photo Editor Robyn Lange sent me a note the other day alerting me to these camouflage images by Liu Bolin, which she thought I would like. And I did indeed! I also found out that Robyn is a hilarious emailer, and has some excellent perspectives on freelance photo editing. So, I made her do a formal interview for le blog. I hope you like! Here we go.

Michael Wolf’s project, “Architecture of Density,” focused on Hong Kong’s exteriors, but when people began to ask him what the insides of the buildings he photographed look like, he decided to bring his camera indoors. Through a friend, he met a social worker who took him around Shek Kip Mei, which was scheduled to be demolished because of its age.

This is a blog about photojournalism, so I want to tell my story about how I photographed this historical event. At 2:21 pm I was in downtown Austin covering a funeral when I got a news alert on my cell phone about the shooting in Killeen. Eleven minutes later I got a call from my editor telling me to hit the road and follow staff photographer Rudy Gonzalez who was already on his way there.

The picture, by Nicole Bengiveno, ran at the top of The Times’s front page on Wednesday. What made Specialist Hill such a compelling focal point was not just his agonized posture. It’s with sad hearts that we lost a great person to tragedy this week. One of my closest friends, former SportsShooter.com member and fellow photographer, Chris Livingston, 36, was struck by a car and killed Monday, Nov. 10th, 2009 while riding his bike and training for a triathlon. He is survived by his wife Catherine, and their 2-year-old son Benjamin.

Yes, it’s a bad time for aspiring photojournalists. But it’s not the worst of times. And David Alan Harvey is among those who are trying to make it better.

With summer internships and graduation looming six months away, assembling a portfolio is the essential piece in applying for internships and jobs. But it’s hard. Photographers constantly wrack their brains looking through bodies of work. Which images should they use? In what order? What does this image convey? What does the portfolio, as a cohesive unit, say about the photographer as an artist and a photojournalist?
