With the advent of so-called mirrorless cameras we now have an alternative – several in fact. For between $500 and $1,000 there are now quite a few choices of so-called mirrorless cameras with 12 – 16MP sensors. Add a good quality lens adaptor, and just about any Leica M mount (or older screw mount) lens can be used. Total cost – about 1/10th of another M9. Image quality? Not as good as an M9, to be sure, but still quite OK, and there as a back-up when needed.

This article will look at three current alternatives, the Sony NEX-5, Panasonic GH2, and Olympus E-PL2. The Sony has an APS-C sized sensor with a 1.5X crop factor when used with a full-frame Leica lens, while the Panasonic and Olympus are Micro 4/3, with a 2X crop factor.

Clashes in northern Lebanon have heightened fears of growing sectarian tensions with Syria and should serve to remind the world that this remains a combustible country whose conflicts have long entangled the United States, Iran, Israel and Syria.

In this video by Stephanie Sinclair we take a look at some of Lebanon’s recent conflicts and ask the question, is the past the future?

Much has already been written about the X100. But then, everybody uses a camera in their own way. For some people it might be the perfect camera, for others not. In that respect a first general observation can already be made: this camera is not for casual shooters. It is complicated. How does it handle for more experienced photographers?

On Thursday, June 9, 2011, we had the pleasure of hosting a live judging of our 2011 Student Project Award that was open to the public at The Bridge Public Arts Initiative in Charlottesville, Virginia. Lead Judge Michael Wichita of the AARP Bulletin led a panel of Gillian Laub (Photographer), Larissa Leclair (Indie Photobook Library) and Molly Roberts (Smithsonian) through the difficult task of selecting one winner from our ten talented finalists. We are very fortunate that one of our finalists, Maddie McGarvey was secretly in the small audience, and when she was selected as the winner it was a very sweet moment. Maddie selected LUCEO photographer Kendrick Brinson (Atlanta) as her mentor.

Among the professions that people love to hate, salesman ranks pretty high. But the art of the sale has come a long way from the days of Willy Loman, slick hair, and shiny suits. Less than upright business practices have been replaced with savvy research, strong negotiation skills, product expertise, and lasting relationships built around honesty, trust and outstanding customer service (ok, most of the time). These are skills that any business owner, and that includes photographers, is capable of developing and the reason why no one should shy away from taking a proactive approach to sales.

A few months ago, I got my first assignment from Fast Company. I was happy to hear from Assistant Photo Editor Lisa Parisi, who asked me to photograph a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for a story they were doing on robots. Fast Company tends to use great photography, so I was glad to have the opportunity to try to impress them.

If you could have only one lens, what would it be? For me, that lens would be the Leica Summilux-M 24mm. It’s a wide-angle lens that isn’t too wide for most purposes. It’s extremely sharp across the frame with no red or cyan corner issues. When opened up to f/1.4, you can use it for most interior shots. Best of all, I like the versatility of the lens. You can use it for clean, almost clinical shots, where everything needs to be clear with a minimum of distortion

IPad-owning photographers should stop reading right now (well, not right now, or you won’t know what to do next) and go download PhotoForge 2, a rather splendid update to the already decent photo-editing app. Better still, if you already bought the iPhone version, the update is free — the app is now universal.
