To be frank, this camera has a few minor (but quite important to higher end users) upgrades to it’s little brother.    There are in effect a lot of SMALL yet very IMPORTANT changes that will have a significant impact on those using this camera in actual PRODUCTIONS.

  • Off the Shelf: Luigi Ghirri’s It’s Beautiful Here, Isn’t It…

One of our favorite photo books from the past few years is Aperture’s “It’s Beautiful Here, Isn’t It…” It was the first American publication of the work of Luigi Ghirri, who at the time was little known in the U.S., and highlights the photographer’s preoccupation with spatial relationships and color photography, and his engagement with concepts that would come to define the New Color and Topographic movements and influence such photo titans as William Eggleston and Martin Parr.

Now, let me anticipate two questions which go hand in hand: Why does the app require an iPad 2, and why is the maximum image size 1600x1600px? The iPad 2 has twice the RAM, twice the processing cores, and ~5x the graphics grunt of the iPad 1. PS Touch brings some seriously powerful algorithms (e.g. Refine Edge) from the desktop to mobile, and we wanted to ensure a good match between hardware & image size. The app is geared more towards remixing photos & sharing them onscreen than towards print work; having said that, note that a 1600×1600 doc could be printed at 10.6×10.6″ at 150dpi.

The most important moments of the 20th century were captured on Kodak film. But the once-dominant American company could not compete in the digital age. Eastman Kodak’s bankruptcy has left the company’s remaining employees with uncertain futures.

It’s not every day you get to hang out with a living legend of the photographic world and watch her do what she does best. That’s exactly what we were fortunate enough to do when we spent a day in New York City’s Tompkins Square Park with an icon of documentary photography, Mary Ellen Mark.

My headline is slight disingenuous: There actually is no simple recipe for photobook making. If you asked ten people about how to make a photobook, you’d probably end up with ten different answers. That said, from what I can tell, most photobook makers seem to agree on quite a few things. So I thought I’d throw my own thoughts into the mix. I hope that some people might find them useful

So, if you want the highest resolution that this camera can provide, then the “e” model is the way to go. But, there’s a price to be paid, and that is the possibility of moiré under some circumstances. As well, there’s the need to use exceptional shooting technique to really realize the advantage that the D800e can offer over the D800. Without such techniques, you’re wasting your money and you’d be better of with the regular D800. We’ll look at this in detail momentarily.
