A Prize-Winner’s Personal Insight
Ross Taylor learned how personal experience gave him insight into the lives of his subjects. On Tuesday, he was named a Photojournalist of the Year in the National Press Photographers Association awards.

The National Press Photographers Association announced on Tuesday its final group of Best of Photojournalism 2012 winners. Ross Taylor of The Virginian-Pilot was chosen Photojournalist of the Year (Larger Markets), and David Weatherwax of The Herald, in Jasper, Ind., was named Photojournalist of the Year (Smaller Markets).
The freelance photographer Donald Miralle was chosen as the Sports Photojournalist of the Year, and Brad Vest — who started on Tuesday as a summer intern at The New York Times — won the Cliff Edom “New America Award.”

“I love being a part of photojournalism,” he told News Photographer magazine, somewhat overcome emotionally by the news of his win. “I love what I do and I believe in what we do. It’s been a long road to this point.”
What Taylor means by that is that he is deeply able to empathize with the subjects of “The Thin Line,” his economic story.
“I was laid off in 2005 (from the Herald-Sun in Durham, NC) and unemployed for 15 months. Nobody was hiring me and I was really scared that I’d never get to be a part of this again.” It was the beginning of the big wave of layoffs across American newspapers. Taylor was eventually hired by The Hartford Courant, and then two-and-a-half years ago he joined The Virginian-Pilot staff.

The move to Staten Island came a few years after studying for her Master’s at Yale in 1974. During that time, she recalls the all-male faculty in the photo department was initially dismissive of her photographs of people and often saw them as funny. “Once I got to Yale I began to recognize where I was from,” Osinski says. “There was a contrast between me and my working class roots compared to the backgrounds of the other students.”

Meet ‘Flame,’ The Massive Spy Malware Infiltrating Iranian Computers
A massive, highly sophisticated piece of malware named Flame has been newly found infecting systems in Iran and elsewhere and is believed to be part of a well-coordinated, ongoing, state-run cyberespionage operation.
Among Flame’s many modules is one that turns on the internal microphone of an infected machine to secretly record conversations that occur either over Skype or in the computer’s near vicinity; a module that turns Bluetooth-enabled computers into a Bluetooth beacon, which scans for other Bluetooth-enabled devices in the vicinity to siphon names and phone numbers from their contacts folder; and a module that grabs and stores frequent screenshots of activity on the machine, such as instant-messaging and e-mail communications, and sends them via a covert SSL channel to the attackers’ command-and-control servers.

I draw a strict line between my photojournalism and commercial campaigns and feature examples of both on my website, where they are clearly labeled for what they are. I support humanitarian intervention, detente and defense as I’ve seen what can happen when those things don’t exist. I am comfortable with where I set the boundaries. I also appreciate and respect that there are many different views about where those boundaries lie.
