I’m going to skip the argument about whether you really need another social media account or how it can benefit your photography business, because the bottom line is this: we know from the analytics that social media drives traffic to photography websites (the aggregate of PhotoShelter websites sees about 23% of their total referral traffic from social media). Joseph Maida, an American photographer who has been working on a Japan-based project since 2007, was in a department store in Kyoto when he first saw the little plastic miniatures of Western consumer goods. The toys sparked nostalgia but were clearly not the product of his own culture. “On the surface they seem completely Western,” he says, “but at their core they’re actually based on something Japanese.”

Before Fred Baldwin and Wendy Watriss became chroniclers of American rural life and inspired generations of photographers and scores of photo festivals around the world, there had to be a beginning.
So how did their partnership start?
“With a torrid affair,” Fred said.
“It was the end of the ’60s,” Wendy added, with a smile and a shrug.
