In honor of its 25th year, the newspaper assigned 25 well-known photographers to a huge photographic project, “Time in Turkey.” The undertaking — partly inspired by the name Zaman, which means “time” — was to create a document of a culture that is often misinterpreted. Selahattin Sevi, the paper’s photo editor, said the project was meant to avoid an orientalist viewpoint.

“Photographing Occupy Wall Street was one of the most difficult stories, visually speaking, that I’ve had to cover in years,” he told me. “My photographs looked as disparate as the motivations of the hundred or so people who lived full time in the park.”

What’s the longest you’ve ever looked at a photo online?
A single photo? Maybe a minute. I go through slideshows pretty quick as well too, but I might play them back a few times. When I’m editing a body of work, I’ll take more time to look at the photos. But it’s more of an aggregate type situation, rather than just looking at one single photograph. Sometimes I’ll find one that is weird and try to figure out how the composition works, or what’s actually happening in the photo.

In the latest series, Recollected Memories, I was inspired by the tales of my families westward migration and am merging the landscapes of the American West with my family albums, attempting to collocate the medium of photography, 21st century digital practices, with the personal. The results that come into focus are new fantastical stories. Each blended piece possesses its own original story while the viewer takes away another version that is his or her own. They are stories of perseverance, pride, struggle, life and death. They are human stories intertwined in a majestic landscape.
