Located between the Dniester River and the eastern border of Ukraine, Transnistria is an unrecognized state of approximately a half million people. Though it asserts itself as a sovereign nation, it is claimed by Moldova and has no diplomatic relations with any United Nations member state.
Visiting the small zone in January of 2011, photographer Kosuke Okahara wanted to see what “it feels like to live in a country that doesn’t exist, if the people are still very attached to the place where they live.” The winner of a 2010 W. Think about the photos you’ve seen from Iraq over the past eight years. It’s fair to assume the majority of what you remember are probably images filled with violence, destruction and fear.
Compare those photos to one made by Safin Hamed, an Iraqi photojournalist in Sulaimaniyah, Iraq. In his photo, Hamed captures a quiet, tender moment between a wife and her husband before he heads off to work at a local hospital.
A: “The Singled Person” is a projection showing the work of eight photographers. There is one slide projector for each photographer. The projection is more like an installation, rather than an exhibition. At any point you can always see three or four screens at once. Because the projectors are not synchronized, it’s never the same. For example, sometimes the works of three photographers synchronize and tell you a story, but then they run apart again and each one is telling its own story again. This happens because each series has a different amount of slides in the tray. One has 25 slides, another 28 and another 32. Also, the projectors’ timers all have a slightly different setting. This makes the projection very organic.
In 2004 I started the Doppelgänger project. I was interested in exploring the concept of the Doppelgänger in a broader way. Doppelgänger in German means ‘double walker’, it is a ghostly double of a living person, an omen of death and a harbinger of bad luck. The idea of the Doppelgänger also allows me look the alter ego, the conscious mind vs the unconscious mind, inner conflicts, the duality between good and evil and split personalities – the concept gives me plenty of material to think about and work with
