The next time you’re stopped by an authority figure for photographing a federally owned or federally leased building, just hand the law’s agent this declassified 2010 DHS directive that unambiguously states that photographing public buildings from a public place is legal, and that harassing people for doing this is illegal, and that asking photogs to delete or hand over their images or videos is also illegal.
“Given the many reports of harassment, we encourage photographers to carry this directive with them, particularly if they intend to take pictures where they’ve had problems in the past,” said Christopher Dunn, associate legal director of the N.Y.C.L.U.

Earlier this month I noted that Banksy had finally spoken about the artist Thierry Guetta (aka Mr. Brainwash) profiled in his now Oscar nominated film Exit Through the Gift Shop . Still, suspicions run fairly rampant that he either doesn’t exist or is merely the latest prank creation by Banksy. Guetta has now given sworn statements that the artwork is his own, as he’s the subject of a copyright lawsuit initiated by photographer Glen E. Friedman. The dilemma is that Elmo Tide is anonymous. He’s posted twice on Flickr and left it at that. No contact info, no forwarding address, no name. Just 81 photos and a goofball pseudonym. Not much info but enough to go viral.

Mr. Spyra, a 26-year-old German photographer, is photographing the aftermath of the war in Bosnia, which claimed 100,000 lives before it ended in 1995. “You ask yourself how could this happen again after what happened in Germany,” he said. “You talk to the people, you talk to the victims of genocide in Bosnia, and I felt truly ashamed, standing there as a German and hearing these kind of stories.”

It’s often difficult to engage an audience with “new” images of prisons, but Moreles succeeded with the image of the collapsed official at his desk (above). The disorganisation of paperwork in this image works as metaphor for a broken institution – much as Hogarth’s littered furniture and bodies are metaphors for broken society.
