Marisa Portolese: The representation of women is at the root of my practice. In most of my projects with the exception of a few, women figure prominently and the female psyche is widely explored. I firmly believe that the world belongs to men and that women are still severely underrepresented. It is with the project entitled “Belle de Jour” that I began to work specifically with women as my primary subjects.

Earlier this fall, way back in October, we offered one photographer the chance to attend NYC Fotoworks portfolio review in NY. This two-day event brought together some of the top editors and photo buyers in the industry with photographers from around the world. It was a great opportunity to get face time with a lot of editors in one place and we were happy to award the pass to Meridith Kohut, a photojournalist and PhotoShelter member based in Caracas Venezuela.
A few weeks after the event we received a lovely note from Meridith thanking us for the opportunity. We decided to follow up with her to see just what she got out of the event and what advice she could share with other photographers on maximizing your time at a portfolio review.

“It is not a portfolio competition. The grants are awarded to a photojournalist who can further cultural understanding and world peace by conceiving and writing a concise, focused, and meaningful story proposal, and who can demonstrate the ability to visually execute that story with compelling images. There is no mathematical formula for determining grantees, but the proposal and photography must both be considered of the highest quality.”

Dylan Coulter sent over an email the other day to tell me about the work he’s been doing with Nike and the “Oregon Project” (Sounds like it involves Jason Bourne, no?) and we got to chatting. I thought I’d share the conversation.

This slide show is taken from the memory card that was in Joao Silva’s camera on Oct. 23 when he stepped on an anti-personnel mine at Checkpoint 16, near the village of Deh-e-Kuchay, Afghanistan. Mr. Silva, a contract photographer for The New York Times, and Carlotta Gall, a Times correspondent, were on patrol with a squad of 10 or 15 American soldiers and a unit of Afghan soldiers and police officers.
