NPPA member Louie Palu is the winner of the 2010 Alexia Foundation Grant for professionals, and NPPA member Juliette Lynch, a senior photojournalism major at Syracuse University, is the student winner, the Alexia Foundation announced.

Kaneko’s essay recounts his personal journey with the photobook, a unique one since few people were buying photobooks when he did (to the point where he once ordered a book only to have the publisher turn up at his door to deliver it himself because he thought it would be cheaper than sending it in the mail).

Last November, the Danish photographer Jan Grarup traveled to East Africa to document refugees as they struggle for survival. He began in the enormous refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya, near the Somali border. He ended three weeks later in Yemen.

Photographer Paul Hansen, a staff photographer with the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, has won newspaper photographer of the year in the 67th annual Picture of the Year International competition at the Missouri School of Journalism. Second place went to Mads Nissen of Denmark, a staff photographer at the Danish daily Berlingske Tidende. Denver Post staff photographer Craig Walker took third place. The winning portfolios were announced over the weekend.
