Given the commotion outside his office in the West Bank one day in 2006 — armed protesters, some of them firing into the air, were marching through the streets of Ramallah — Osama Silwadi, a well-known Palestinian photojournalist, naturally went to the window to see what was going on.

The two bullets that struck him at that moment shattered his spine.
