The constraints imposed by covering the White House made Christopher Morris strive harder to make meaningful images in controlled circumstances, and he focused the approach on a country fatigued by war and economic disaster.

“I love the challenge of working under a group of people that are trying to control the image,” Mr. Morris, 55, said last month. “I hate to say it’s like going into North Korea, but it is like dealing with Hollywood publicists. The image handlers go through great lengths to make sure that you’re photographing exactly what they want and nothing else, and my great joy is trying to bend the rules and escape that.”
