For some, conveying a sense of place is the central purpose for the work; for others, it is a concern secondary to, or even distracting from, other narrative or conceptual goals. Yet some of the best photographs manage to thread the needle between these approaches, allowing place to inform the work without reducing it to an expression of geography alone.
