Daniel Berehulak, a freelance photographer for The New York Times, was named Photographer of the Year in the reportage category of the Pictures of the Year International contest. Brad Vest, of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, was named Newspaper Photographer of the Year.
Ross Taylor learned how personal experience gave him insight into the lives of his subjects. On Tuesday, he was named a Photojournalist of the Year in the National Press Photographers Association awards.
The National Press Photographers Association announced on Tuesday its final group of Best of Photojournalism 2012 winners. Ross Taylor of The Virginian-Pilot was chosen Photojournalist of the Year (Larger Markets), and David Weatherwax of The Herald, in Jasper, Ind., was named Photojournalist of the Year (Smaller Markets).
The freelance photographer Donald Miralle was chosen as the Sports Photojournalist of the Year, and Brad Vest — who started on Tuesday as a summer intern at The New York Times — won the Cliff Edom “New America Award.”
“As a student, he seems willing to push his skills to follow long-term projects, but he is not afraid to do daily assignments or simple reportage. In the last two years I have watched him take on daily ‘event’ work for the college. He does this daily work with the same energy that he brings to his personal projects. He’s a visual storyteller.”
