When photographer and publisher Jesse Lenz first settled down on a farm in rural Ohio with his family he was forced to reimagine long-held beliefs about process, practice, art, and life. After several years of living and traveling North American in an airstream, he discovered a different sort of movement and change. As his children’s imaginations ran wild in the fields, finding and creating worlds amongst and alongside plants, insects, and animals, Lenz’s own eyes opened to a whole new way of seeing the world around him. Remaining in one place in no way necessitates being static (something many of us has been forced to reconcile with this year), and in fact can reveal to us what we’ve long forgotten. With his first major monograph, The Locusts, Lenz finds that the magic of childhood is the perfect vehicle with which to understand change, whether it’s seasonal cycles of birth and death or the natural imperfections of simply being alive in this world.

I began this review with these questions in mind, mostly in passing as they reflect the cacophony and performance of Mihai Baranbancea’s incredibly chaotic and brilliant Falling On Blades (Edition Patrick Frey, 2020). The book is thick tome full of intense images of Barabancea’s Romania. It is in colour and likely shot through a Yashica T4 or Contax-some form of small compact camera that allows the artist close access to the innumerable scenes of wild Romania. I tend to think of this kind of work once belonging to Vice in the early 2000s and that is not a slight against Mihai-in fact, that would have been about the timeframe when Vice was equally chaotic and sociologically-speaking was pushing boundaries that now in 2020 that as a news organisation look slightly faded and increasingly unnecessary. I am reminded of Peter Sutherland, Dash Snow etc. when I look at Mihai’s work. He has an access to Romania that outsiders do not and you can feel the low-light and flash-induced images in all their fast-paced glory. There is an anxiety involved. There is a palpable danger and a return to risk-taking that seems to have gone missing over the past decade.
Ryan Debolski’s series, LIKE, explores the physical and digital relationships of the migrant workers who build the infrastructure of Oman, a rapidly modernizing country rich in oil and natural gas. These men, predominantly from East Africa and the Indian subcontinent, communicate using widely available, low-cost smartphones that help them cope with the social isolation they face while living in camps for years. As quickly as new friends are made, others disappear without a trace, never to be heard from again: workers are deported for various reasons, or shuffled around to different camps throughout the region.

Bowie, of the Baltimore Sun, began adjusting to working from home.
