Last weekend I attended Review Santa Fe, an annual juried portfolio-review event in New Mexico. A hundred photographers were selected to participate, and over the course of three days I met with twenty-five of them. I saw many exciting projects, in various stages of development, both in these reviews and at the open portfolio review night, ranging from fine art to photojournalism. Here’s a small selection of some of the most impressive work that Review Santa Fe introduced me to.

On Thursday, Damon Winter of The New York Times was named photojournalist of the year (large markets) in the association’s Best of Photojournalism contest, for his work in Haiti and Afghanistan.
A series on the victims of gang violence by Barbara Davidson of The Los Angeles Times was named the best published picture story (large markets) by the photographers association.
Richard Koci Hernandez has won more than 17,000 followers with his film-noir photo stream, Kristen Joy Watts reports.

Looking at projects based on Google Maps Street View (GSV), particularly large photographs in physical galleries, makes me wonder: Is Street View a camera? Or a repository of source images? Or both?
Ms. Trieb, 28, said she found it far more daunting to photograph the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder among the same soldiers when they returned to Fort Drum in upstate New York in December 2009. “Almost every soldier I talked to said they were having problems,” she said. These included drug abuse, binge drinking, attempted suicide and spousal abuse.

The black photography collective Kamoinge grew out of the Harlem of the 1960s. It is still growing.

This is Kamoinge, a group of mostly New York photographers who strive to capture the black experience. Members of the collective, which came together in 1963, are working to create an archive of their work and maintain the Kamoinge name.

I have documented the lives of the poor in the Caribbean and Latin America for a decade. The people I meet struggle, strive, hope, dream, live and die in those 23º. While this region is only one part of the globe, the lives of turmoil and legacies of hope within it are emblematic of people around the world who suffer at the same latitudes. Their lives are separated by a chasm of degrees, in contrast to those living in developed nations to the north and south.

Magnum Photographers Alec Soth, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Paolo Pellegrin, Mikhael Subotsky, and writer Ginger Strand are a bunch of friends going on a homespun adventure; a two week road trip, from May 11-26, across America. Rather than a super group on a stadium tour, the Postcards From America trip will be more in the spirit of a band going back to a small venue tour — a tour where they have to drive their own van and haul their own gear.

When asked by TIME to reflect on his favorite photographs in a post honoring his work, he initially pointed to a stack of his published books but paused.
“I hope that most of [my favorites] are not in any book and they haven’t been taken yet. But I realize that we can’t show pictures that haven’t been taken,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Magnum photographer and filmmaker Elliott Erwitt, 82, will receive the Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement from the International Center of Photography, which will exhibit his favorite pictures as “Personal Best,” beginning May 20. For the occasion, he agreed to let his son Misha Erwitt, a photographer himself, present him with a list of questions that family members have long wanted to ask.

Last week, Bill Keller, the executive editor of The New York Times, met with the photographers Joao Silva and Greg Marinovich at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where Mr. Silva is recovering from the grave injuries he suffered — including the loss of his legs — when a land mine exploded under him in Afghanistan. Their conversation, which served as the basis for Mr. Keller’s column in The Times Magazine this week, is presented here in full, with minor editing and condensing.
As this project has developed, the locations and subjects are beginning to speak to me in a language that is clearer and more resolute. Which is not to say that it is easy or that I am always successful. On the contrary. But I do feel a clearer understanding of how the panos and single frame multiple exposures can be used to convey a range of ideas.
