There are plenty of destinations to find quality work these days but I find there are very few that have a distinct point of view, and finding quality writing about photography is still a challenge. Far too many new blogs and magazines simply want to replicate what’s been done already (me too!) or have misguided editorial missions

Reframing Mexico
The drug war in Mexico captures attention, but there is a vibrant culture beyond the headlines. “Reframing Mexico” explores under-reported stories of challenges and successes in Mexico City. For just eight days in one of the world’s largest cities, students faced language, access, culture, transportation, and interpersonal challenges working extremely long hours in often very difficult conditions. The 12 stories they produced are exceptional and often beautiful. A single mother raising her children in one of Mexico’s largest garbage dumps, a middle age carpenter whose illegal immigration to the U.S. ended when the American dream proved elusive, and a young mother struggling to raise her baby in prison are just a few examples. The stories show a side of Mexico City not often portrayed in the media.

FOCUSED
Focused:
FOCUSED came out of an idea to rejuvenate some film I had. I had no idea how that would happen, but all I knew is I wanted it to be a shared effort amongst my favorite photographers. On a three hour trip to Miami to catch a flight to the Bahamas for a shoot, I revealed my idea to my friend and fellow photographer, Brian Blanco, who helped me brainstorm this project down to one simple thought: one camera. one click. one moment.
FOCUSED is rekindling the Decisive Moment one frame at a time. There will be 200 photojournalists to start – from students to Pulitzer Prize winners – and the list of confirmed names is insane – here. A photojournalist on the list will be mailed a film camera and a roll of film – with the challenge of getting only one click of the shutter to capture whatever they want and then mail the camera onto the next photojournalist. Pretty simple concept. Terrifying to some. A welcome break to others.

13ft fall
I remember looking at a picture of a farm when I was
a boy. It was an old photo I’d found in a box in my
grandparent’s attic. It was cold and dusty and I knew
I really wasn’t supposed to be there. And yet, in my
hand was another world. I fell into it and, ever so
briefly, I was warm and there were birds in the thick
summer air. The grass was lush beneath my feet. This
was another universe that had been sliced paper thin
there in my palm. This then is my collection of slices. Enjoy.

The Chain
The Chain’ is the latest project curated by Stuart Pilkington, (curator of The Alphabet Project and the 50 States Project).
Stuart invited 107 photographers from around the globe to participate in the project at the beginning of 2011.
And in February 2011 each photographer submitted a title/instruction to inspire a photograph by another person in the project. The photographers were connected like links in a chain. They were asked to respond to the title set by the person directly behind them. The title they set was directed to the photographer directly in front of them
