The PhotoJournalist: New Issue Silent Screams on sale now | Centre for Documentary Practice
In 2011, 52 years after the signing of the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child, millions of children around the globe continue to live in a state of constant emergency – their rights forgotten, their futures pre-written. Far removed from the UN offices that gave birth to the declaration, for these children protection, safety and a free, dignified childhood are but a distant dream.
This edition of the Australian PhotoJournalist is dedicated to them. Collectively, the children’s stories are the silent scream on the pages of this magazine.

We Chinese – Wo Men Zhong Guo Ren – 我们中国人 – by M. Scott Brauer
This project grew out of a curiosity to find out what Chinese people think about their country and their future. In 2010, I traveled throughout major urban centers in eastern China stopping people on the street to ask the same two questions about their country and their future. The respondents filled out a one-page typewritten questionnaire that included these two questions and some basic information including name, age, and occupation. The questions were interpreted variously, and the responses range from prosaic to poetic, from rote to inspired, and from unemotional to patriotic. While it’s difficult to draw conclusions about the entire population, the people photographed here expressed a sincere love of country and optimism about the country’s future development and peaceful position in the world.

Recently on medical leave for two-months with a herniated disc in his lower back (L4/L5), photojournalist Patrick Smith returned to work in November 2010. Unfortunately, after 12 days, he reinjured his back and had surgery (L4-5 Laminectomy, discectomy with foraminotomy) on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010.
This blog is a daily, wordy-glimpse into his pre-operation, surgery and boring recovery in Baltimore, Md.

My brother and I are leaving on our cross-country journey today. We planning to leave in summer, but the great group of people we’ve met here in Asheville have kept us for several months. Winter is here and we will bike through the cold, despite the cringes from our friends. With our departure, we are launching our Web site where we will host all our short films, photos and musings. We’d love to have all of you follow along.
