A new book entitled Day Sleeper now lifts Lange’s work out of the stasis it has found itself in for too long. For the book, Sam Contis used the archive housed at the Oakland Museum of California (plus images from the Library of Congress and the National Archives). In her afterword, Contis writes that “[t]he more I spent looking through her contact sheets, the more I started to feel an unexpected kinship. […] I formed the idea of making a book that would show her in a new light and also reflect a shared sensibility.”

In his new book, “Attention Servicemember,” Ben Brody recounts being sent to a Rotary Club luncheon near Fort Stewart, Georgia, to present a slide show of pictures he had taken as an Army combat photographer in Iraq. Brody’s mandate overseas had been “to photograph the war in a way that justified its existence and exaggerated its accomplishments.” At the luncheon, however, he found himself telling the Rotarians about an American soldier killed by friendly fire and showing them images of night raids and executions. “I wanted them to feel the murderous heat and arbitrary death and relentless absurdity that came with my job,” Brody writes. The effort failed: “No one stopped eating during my talk, and when I was done they clapped a little.” With “Attention Servicemember,” Brody tries again. This time, he will make you stop eating. He might make you stop breathing and blinking.

My first reaction to Dutch photographer Otto Snoek’s new book, Why Not, was that Rotterdam was off my travel list. Even so, it’s immediately evident that Mr. Snoek is a master of urban street photography, and after further consideration, Rotterdam represents many contemporary urban centers that draw residents from all over the world. Snoek’s style is similar to Martin Parr, but his subject matter is more universal. He synthesizes many things at once—compassion, humor, and an acute ability to observe human behavior.
Georgian Spring – A Magnum Journal is a wonderful book for many reasons, one of them being the fact that it can serve as a good starting point for discussions of the nature of the beast, photojournalism’s imagery. Of course, it is a little bit unfair to use the book in such a way – shouldn’t I be talking about the topic of the book? But in this case, talking about the book almost inevitably involves talking about photojournalism itself.

The style of Eskenazi’s photography follows the lead of the likes of Gilles Peress — an accomplishment considering the plethora of bad photojournalism that is far too wrapped up in visual geometry and gymnastics at the expense of deeper content. Eskenazi has learned to make compelling photographs that have the strength of both form and content.
This Thursday, Ryan McGinley will have his third solo show at Team Gallery. An exhibition of new work, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, will run from March 18 through April 17 and will be accompanied by a monograph published by Dashwood Book. David Strettell, the book’s publisher (also, of course, the owner of the New York’s only independent photography bookstore, Dashwood), spoke with Ryan for us to help us understand his segue from outdoor colors to black and white studio portraiture. Ryan also provided us with a preview of images from the new book.
In February of 2006 I unknowingly began making images that would later become an all-consuming project lasting for more than four years. I am excited to announce the first real printing of this body of work. Gee, there hasn’t been one of those since — let’s see, what day of the week is this?
“It was fundamental that we found images that people haven’t seen before,” said Reuel Golden, the editor and author of the newly published “New York, Portrait of a City” (Taschen). The goal, Mr. Golden said, was to “unveil hidden gems that would excite even the most jaded New Yorkers and then print them big and bold.”
