In Skate Park, photographer Arthur Tress begins by describing the park itself, presenting each curve and undulation of this concrete landscape as a sculptural work of art. Dreadlocks and tattoos appear shortly thereafter; tanned and leathery skin stretched tightly over the lean frames of young men competing for air and glory. Tress romanticizes their condition.

I’m excited to share the publication of Jennifer Shaw’s first monograph, Hurricane Story, published by Chin Music Press. I’ve been a fan of Jennifer’s work for some time and in particular, this series that takes us through an experience that was life changing in so many ways. Her unique photographic approach to simultaneously experiencing Hurricane Katrina and the birth of her first child, is indeed, a success story!
In my previous post, I outlined some specific thoughts related to the Photography Book Now competition as it enters it’s 4th year. There’s $25k up for grabs for the best in self-published photography books.
Beyond that, I hinted at the “extremely rich moment” we are witnessing in the history of photography and books. Unparalleled resources and tools are available for artistic expression and the possibilities for distribution, primarily of self-published books, are growing. Two of the most well-known names in photography book publishing and promotion have joined their considerable forces in a new book about publishing photography, called simply enough, Publish Your Photography Book. In their brief introduction, Darius Himes & Mary Virginia Swanson clearly outline the text with their stated aim: “to crack open the door to the publishing world and lead the reader through an exploration of this rich sphere.” In short, they expose what it takes to be entrepreneurial in selling your book idea to a publisher and then in bringing your work to the broadest possible audience.
By today’s standards David Carol is an “Old School” photographer. He shoots only Tri-X film using Leicas and Hasselblad rangefinders. His film is hand developed in Rodinal and printed on fiber based paper using a point source enlarger. David will show examples of his work and discuss his career and how he approaches taking pictures.

I must admit, Michael Wolf’s two-volume portrayal of urban planning run amok had me running in circles for a while. I was stymied by the duality, by the muteness of interior and exterior, intimacy and mass, specific and abstract — there seemed to be no reconciling the two until I realized that I could use an old saw to cleave the knot. You know, the one about books and their covers? In this case, it’s not true.
