The winning entries of the 59th annual World Press Photo Contest have just been announced. The 2016 Photo of the Year is a haunting nighttime image of refugees climbing through razor wire over the the Hungarian-Serbian border, taken by photographer Warren Richardson. This year, according to organizers, 82,951 photos were submitted for judging, made by 5,775 photographers from 128 different countries. Winners in eight categories were announced, including Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, People, Sports, and Spot News. World Press Photo has been kind enough to allow me to share some of this year’s winning photos here with you.
The first prize went to Syrian photographer Sameer Al-Doumy for his series on the effects of aerial bombardments on rebel forces in Douma and Hamouria. The second place went to Roberto Schmidt for his coverage of the avalanche on Everest. The third place went to Bulent Kilic for his series on Syrian refugees fleeing into Turkey.
Photographers are often at the center of ongoing wars, disasters and conflicts, showing the courage to brave a moment for a chance to document it. Such is reflected in this year’s World Press Photo winning news images: from refugees to teenage Islamic State fighters, child victims of air raids to the mourning Nepalese after a brutal earthquake.

Francis Kohn, the jury chairman and photo director at Agence France-Presse, described Mr. Richardson’s World Press Photo of the Year image as subtle, with an “overall simplicity of just the moonlight, the barbed wire, the man and the baby.”
