Photojournalist Tyler Hicks of The New York Times is the recipient of the 2013 Robert Capa Gold Medal Award for his photographs of a terrorist attack on the upscale Westgate Shopping Center in Nairobi, Kenya last year. The same picture story by Hicks won
The Capa Gold Medal honors the “best published photographic reporting from abroad requiring exceptional courage and enterprise.” It is awarded annually by the Overseas Press Club of America (OPC). It was created in honor of the legendary war photographer Robert Capa. The first Capa Gold Medal was awarded in 1955 to Howard Sochurek.
“Daniel has an ability to capture quiet, intimate moments among chaos, and there is a tenderness to his work,” she said. “He treats his colleagues and subjects with compassion and respect.”
The International Women’s Media Foundation is honored to announce the inception of the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award honoring the courage and dedication of Associated Press photographer Anja Niedringhaus who was killed in Afghanistan
Upon learning that Niedringhaus had been shot by a gunman in East Afghanistan on April 4, 2014, Buffett told the IWMF: “I considered Anja a friend who represented the best of photojournalism. By creating this award, we ensure her spirit lives on. Anja’s voice may be silenced but our hope is that other voices who share her commitment become louder.”
The Times swept the 2014 prizes for photography. Tyler Hicks won for his coverage of a terrorist attack at a Nairobi mall. Josh Haner was honored for his images of the slow and painful recovery process of a Boston Marathon bombing survivor.
“For me it’s a symbol of what we do at the newspaper as a whole — the best of foreign reporting and the best of our enterprise,” said Michele McNally, the paper’s assistant managing editor for photography. “It is recognition that our photojournalism is on par with the quality of The New York Times’s reporting, which is the best in the world.”

The Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund today announces, exclusively through LightBox, the winners of its 2014 grants. The fund, which began in 2009, awards annual grants to photographers from around the world to support anticipatory work that sheds light on under-reported issues and communities.
