Having looked at and thought on this photo each time it was feted in still another venue this year, its main problem, I fear, is how quickly and hard one falls in love with it. There is news photography and then there is fairy tale. Here, coworkers become lovers become Romeo and Juliet. And that’s about about art, and about us more than them.

So let me take up briefly the concern that photography awards can favor artistry over other values such as documentary witness, hard-boiled realism, formal simplicity, or critical provocation.  Of course, these are extremely important values, but we know that.  The question is whether photographs should win awards for doing something else; something like this.

Categories range from Contemporary Issues to Arts & Culture, with the category winners being revealed March 18, 2014, and the overall winner being announced April 30, 2014. Here is just a small selection of entries

Each year, the quality of the work submitted for the Conscientious Portfolio Competition makes picking the winners a tough job. But it has to be done, and it is a luxury problem to have. This year, guest judges Alice Rose George and Ann-Christin Bertrand helped me do the job

Well, so much for my plans. The First Annual Photo Geek Geek Photo contest received over 400 entries from at least 20 countries. And they were really good. Many of the entries went to a level of geekiness that surpassed anything I’ve ever tried (and that’s saying something). Others were geekily created images that could well be entered in a straight photo contest. There were beautiful images, funny images, intimidating images, and images that we don’t have words to describe.
