On Thursday, Damon Winter of The New York Times was named photojournalist of the year (large markets) in the association’s Best of Photojournalism contest, for his work in Haiti and Afghanistan.

A series on the victims of gang violence by Barbara Davidson of The Los Angeles Times was named the best published picture story (large markets) by the photographers association.

Arcimboldo Prize: Back from Afghanistan

Organized by the Association Gens d’Images and with an award of 8,000 Euros thanks to the Swiss Life Foundation, the Arcimboldo Prize 2011 has been awarded to Alexis Cordesse for his series Border Lines with a special distinction to Gilles Desrozier for his series Inscape.

NPPA’s Best Of Photojournalism contest coordinators today announced winners in the competition’s Picture Editing and Best Use Of Photography categories, and after being delayed for several weeks and “re-judged” after some entries had accidently not been included in the first round only one category had a slightly different outcome

Miki Kratsman will photograph Palestinians with a lens used by the unmanned aircraft of the Israeli Defense Forces. Photographs of shadids, or martyrs, as they are seen in posters in the occupied territories will be the basis for another segment of the project. For a third portion of the work, Kratsman will photograph articles of clothing warn by Palestinians when they were killed, a nod to Francois Aubert’s 1867 photograph of the shirt of Mexican ruler Maximilian just after he was executed.

Swikar Patel Named NPPA Humanitarian Award Winner

Photojournalist Swikar Patel of The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, IN, has been awarded with the National Press Photographers Association’s Humanitarian Award for his actions on March 29 when he stopped to take part in the rescue of a child trapped at the scene of an auto accident.

Thai Protest Photos Earn a Capa Medal

Agnes Dherbeys had never before photographed such a violent breaking news story. For her work in Bangkok, the Overseas Press Club has bestowed the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award.

Her approach has earned Agnes Dherbeys, 34, the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award from the Overseas Press Club of America. The medal honors the “best published photographic reporting from abroad requiring exceptional courage and enterprise.” Ms. Dherbeys, a freelancer, was on assignment for The New York Times. “Her images are close-up, powerful and direct,” the citation said.

Richard Murphy: No, I don’t think we felt any obligation to give special consideration to photographs from any particular event. We certainly expected to see work from the major news events of the year, but we did not give them any extra weight. I would note that the breaking news winner in 2010 was a single image from a single photographer working in middle America documenting the rescue of a single person during a single isolated incident. In terms of world news it was a tiny event. That being said, a disaster of biblical proportions certainly offers more opportunity for dramatic photographs.

Oskar Barnack Award Jury Session

On April 12th the Oskar Barnack Jury met in Frankfurt, Germany to review the entries. This year’s jury included: Anna Grip, Editor of Photonews in Germany; Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Director of the Leica Gallery in Salzburg, Austria; Stanley Greene, a Professional Photographer based in France and the USA and Mark Rykoff, Photo Editor at Time.com. After many, many hours of reviewing submissions, the winners were selected. Here’s a video with a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the judges deliberating.
