On Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize’s reproduction of structural inequality, Mohamed Bourouissa’s ambivalent ‘victory’ and the implications for curatorial responsibility
What this amounts to is curatorial malpractice on the one hand, and capitalist oppression on the other – a form of reproducing and perpetuating racial inequality, both in material and ideological terms. A quick, top-level calculation of the monies awarded to just the winners alone (these figures exclude the smaller sums given to runners up) shows that a total of £485,000 has been awarded to white artists (82%), in comparison to £105,000 awarded to artists of colour (18%) – a wildly unequal distribution. Not only this, but it subsequently impacts on the discrepancies in levels of press coverage received, as well as interest from galleries, museums and collectors with implications for their markets and price points of artworks. Clearly no honest observer can say that such devaluation, in every sense of the word, isn’t a problem. And it’s a white problem that needs to be urgently addressed going forward.

Today, on Women’s Equality Day, Leica Camera USA announces the launch of its second annual Leica Women Foto Project Award as part of its continued commitment to diversity and inclusivity in photography. As part of the Leica Women Foto Project, three photographers will each be awarded $10,000 and a Leica Q2 camera to support the completion of a personal project expressed through the female perspective. Call for entries begins today, August 26 at 9:00AM ET and will close on October 8 at 11:59PM ET. In this edition, 162 media outlets from 34 different countries have sent in their works. Of the 1,000 entries in the competition, 400 correspond to printed graphics categories and 600 to digital infographics categories. The jury gave a total of 170 medals, 17 gold, 65 silver and 87 bronze medals in printed and digital media. From the 170 medals awarded by the jury, 58 went to the printed category (5 gold medals, 18 silver and 35 bronze) and 112 went to the online category (12 gold medals, 47 silver and 52 bronze).

This year’s ten winners–Melissa Breyer, Dimpy Bhalotia, Alexandre Silberman, Joaquín Luna, Jutharat Pinyodoonyachet, Shevaun Williams, Claude R. Hannah Reyes Morales documents tenderness amidst adversity. Her photography, both visceral and intimate, explores how resilience is embodied in daily life. She grew up in Manila, witnessing loved ones depart from home each year. These departures, along with the discovery of a shelf of dusty photographic magazines, stirred her interest in concerned photography. Morales has reported on forced marriages in Cambodia, documented women’s experiences with assault in the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, explored the long-term effects of colonization on women’s bodies in the Philippines, photographed the toll of Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, and documented the Filipino Diaspora. In 2019, she participated in the World Press Photo’s Joop Swart Masterclass and received the Tim Hetherington Visionary Award. She is a 2020 National Geographic Explorer and the World Economic Forum named her a cultural leader in its ASEAN forum. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and National Geographic Magazine, among others.
Sir Don McCullin. He photographed his first open conflict essay about the civil war in Cyprus in 1964. In 1966 he began an eighteen-year affiliation with the London Sunday Times Magazine, covering major conflicts and battlefields — the Congo, Biafra, Israel, Vietnam, Cambodia, Northern Ireland, Bangladesh, Lebanon, El Salvador, Iraq, and Syria — and became recognized both as a master of black-and-white photography and as a legendary war photographer. He is the author of more than twenty books, including his acclaimed autobiography, Unreasonable Behaviour. Previous recognition includes two Premier Awards from World Press Photo, the 2006 ICP Infinity Awards Cornell Capa Award, and the 2016 Master of Photography at Photo London. He was made Commander of the British Empire in 1993, and was knighted in 2017. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including a full retrospective of his career presented by London’s Tate Britain in 2019.
