Hey its mid-February so it must be time to check out the winners from World Press Photo.
I gotta say quite emphatically that this year’s choices are completely and utterly disappointing, especially in comparison to some really kick ass stuff from last year. And I’ve heard this feeling echoing thru discussions in many photo circles and message boards already.

CLICK NOTE: I found a lot of these winners to appear highly ‘Shopped. Can someone please explain to me how the clouds in this National Geographic International Photography Contest winning photograph are true reflections? Sure looks like a hideous photoshop job to me.These shallow waters are mainly famous for flamingos at Nal Sarovar near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The picture shows the reflection of clouds on water.

State of the Art: Subotzky Wins Eugene Smith Grant
South African photographer Mikhael Subotzky has been awarded the 2008 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography. Subotzky received the grant, worth $30,000, for his project “Crime, Punishment and Security in Post-Apartheid South Africa.”

E&P announced today the winners in its 9th annual Newspaper Photos of the Year competition. The grand prizerwinner is freelancer Shiho Fukada, who is based in New York City and China, for her remarkable series of photographs following last spring’s tragic earthquake in China.

The Great Outdoors 2008 Gallery
As we face the continued effects of global warming, pollution and industrialization, it is important to show just how precious our planet is and why we need to preserve it. It was with this thought in mind that Photo District News once again teamed up with National Geographic Traveler to introduce the first annual The Great Outdoors photo contest—a photographic competition that was deliberately created to celebrate the beauty of nature and humanity’s place in it, whether braving deadly waterfalls in a kayak or simply enjoying the breathtaking view of a garden from a nearby window.
