Since its introduction 1950, Photokina has taken the title as the largest trade show related to photography in the world. This biennially held trade show takes place every two years in Cologne, Germany and brings in nearly 200,000 people for each event. With it transitioning to an annual show starting next year, many have said that this year was the last year of Photokina in its glory. And perhaps as that last biennially, brands from all areas of the photography industry took this past week as an opportunity to show their cards, and give us some pretty incredible product announcements to be trickled out in the next six months or so.

Zeiss just announced a new ZX1 full frame camera with 36MP, 35mm f/2 fixed lens, EVF, 4.3″ screen, aluminum body, integrated Lightroom and 512 GB internal memory (full specifications available here):

It’s not often camera news puts dread in my heart, but Panasonic’s full frame announcement felt like watching CNN at its most doom-laden. The future, suddenly, does not seem so bright for us Micro Four Thirds (M43) shooters.

Canon has officially unveiled the new EOS R, the company’s first full-frame mirrorless competitor. The announcement comes just two weeks after Nikon revealed its first full-frame mirrorless system, the Z Series.

Yes, it’s finally here, the Canon EOS R mirrorless full frame camera. The Canon EOS R is somewhat late to the game with Sony, Panasonic & Fujifilm all making mirrorless models. Canon does have the EOS M line of cameras but they have never appealed to many in the same way as those offered from the other brands.

Both of the 150MP backs feature a 151-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor for “unprecedented image quality in detail” — “a world first in full frame medium format photography,” Phase One says.

Nikon just released the new Nikkor 500mm f/5.6 PF ED VR, a new super-telephoto prime lens that’s ultra small and lightweight for its class.

The Z mount uses a large 55mm inner diameter and a 16mm flange focal distance that allow for apertures as fast as f/0.95 and a slim body design. It also opens the door to other lens properties that weren’t previously possible with Nikon’s F mount.
