While the size of the Leica file is smaller than those of the medium format cameras, and therefore display smaller at 100% magnification on screen, we observe that the Leica files have the best sharpness and resolution of all compared here.

Thoughts on Medium Format Cameras
I do not like 35 mm professional DSLR’s. I make no bones about it. In my view, they are clunky, badly designed with too many buttons and dials and levers in the wrong locations, insane menus and terrible ergonomics. To me they feel made of cheap plastic loaded with lead. They weigh way too much for what they are. Between the AA filters, the smaller sensors and the manufacturing tolerances of the bodies, the lenses, the autofocus systems and the positioning of the viewing screens, the image quality is not good enough for me.

Fujifilm’s hot, retro-tastic X100 has finally gotten a U.S launch date, a price, and a proper spec sheet. The 12.3MP camera will be available in March for $1,200. DxOMark Sensor For Benchmarking Cameras
This article thus addresses various interrelated questions:
What do the DxOMark Sensor results mean?
How valid are the benchmark scores?
Why do large sensors outperform smaller ones?
Why don’t MPixels say much about image quality?
What can we learn about the cameras and industry from the DxOMark data? -

Cameras are getting smaller – and the footage is getting more amazing
Not only is it impressive to see manufacturers make smaller and smaller form factors these days (5k resolution in the EPIC or 1080p inside the tiny GoPro HD!), but it is absolutely amazing what kind of footage these smaller cameras are allowing to be captured. For most of us: smaller cameras are clearly the future.

Leica M9 Second Body Alternatives
With the advent of so-called mirrorless cameras we now have an alternative – several in fact. For between $500 and $1,000 there are now quite a few choices of so-called mirrorless cameras with 12 – 16MP sensors. Add a good quality lens adaptor, and just about any Leica M mount (or older screw mount) lens can be used. Total cost – about 1/10th of another M9. Image quality? Not as good as an M9, to be sure, but still quite OK, and there as a back-up when needed.
This article will look at three current alternatives, the Sony NEX-5, Panasonic GH2, and Olympus E-PL2. The Sony has an APS-C sized sensor with a 1.5X crop factor when used with a full-frame Leica lens, while the Panasonic and Olympus are Micro 4/3, with a 2X crop factor.

Panasonic G3 Review
In mid-June, and as luck (and some planning) would have it, I was able to obtain production samples of Panasonic’s new DMC G3 camera and also a pre-production sample of the Leica Summilux DG 25mm F1.4 lens for testing. This coincided with a two week visit to our place in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. This report is based on those two weeks of shooting.

Canon Mirrorless on the Horizon?
IPad-owning photographers should stop reading right now (well, not right now, or you won’t know what to do next) and go download PhotoForge 2, a rather splendid update to the already decent photo-editing app. Better still, if you already bought the iPhone version, the update is free — the app is now universal.
