Nikon has unveiled six additions to its compact digital camera lineup. Leading the pack is the Coolpix P7100, a reworked version of the P7000 that addresses head-on that camera’s various performance and design quirks (and should result in the P7100 being the most capable RAW-shooting Coolpix ever produced), the Coolpix S1200pj, a 14 million image pixel model which can can serve as a projector too (including for an iOS device from Apple), the waterproof/shockproof Coolpix AW100 and three others.

Sony A77 First Impressions
It’s impossible to know what the future will bring. But, it’s likely that the Sony A77 will be regarded as one of the most fascinating new camera introductions of 2011. The camera was announced on 24 August, and won’t be released until early October. Thanks to Sony Canada I had an opportunity in early August to spend four days field testing a pre-production camera, along with the new 16-50mm f/2.8 lens.

As I said before in a much viewed post, SONY GREW SOME BALLS and produced a camera that so many of us wanted to be made! Yes, the NEX-7 is HOT. Even more so than the super hot and hyped Fuji X100 (which I am still in love with by the way). So lucky me…I have been fortunate enough to have been shooting with the final production version of the NEX-7 for the last two weeks and have learned its ins and outs as well as its strengths and weaknesses. I’ve been studying it, shooting with it, and even waking up at night from nightmares of a NEX-7 floating above my bed. No joke! Guess I really get into my job and my passion huh?

Panasonic GX1 First Impressions
at this point what I can say about the upcoming (December, 2011) GX1 is that when it comes to just about everything that I can test, the camera looks like a winner for Panasonic. If image quality turns out to be comparable or even slightly better than the G3 from this past summer, and there’s no reason to doubt that it will not, then there are bound to be a lot of GX1 cameras and X lenses in some folks Christmas stockings this season

The Nikon D4 is clearly made to compete with the Canon EOS 1Dx. I will stay conservative on the announcement date, but there is a very good chance that the Nikon D4 will be announced right before or during the PMA show in Las Vegas (January 10-13, 2012).

The other end of the spectrum is something like the U.S. auto industry in the 1980s. You don’t have to drive a Buick Slyhawk to know the entire industry was in crisis. One glance says it all.
I’m not claiming cameras are like cars. Most current models work just fine regardless of aesthetics. But some designs leave me scratching my head. What were they thinking?
