I’m quite happy with my work as a commercial location photographer the last 18 years and thought I would add my two cents on the new Leaf Aptus II 10 back and my experiences and how I came to my decision. I went back and forth trying to rationalize the purchase of a high-end digital back the last several years. In the film days, I enjoyed shooting with my Leica Ms, Canon F1s and Eos 1’s, Hasselblad 203’s, Mamiya 7’s, Fuji GX617’s, Fuji 6×9 rangefinders, and Contax 645. I enjoyed shooting with all of these cameras for different reasons and I grabbed the best tool suited for different jobs. Plus I like variety.

Again to our eye the 7D files look soft and mushy compared to the snap in the other two files. Of course we expected the flagship Mark III to outperform the mid-priced 7D but we did not expect the entry level Rebel to better the 7D especially when the Rebel’s 12MP files were interpolated to 18MP!

About a month ago I was fortunate to get the opportunity to spend a few days shooting with a couple of pre-production Canon 1D Mark IV’s. Because the camera had not yet been announced, I was somewhat limited in where I could shoot. In other words, I wasn’t able to shoot an NFL game or the like. Also, the raw processing software had not yet been finalized, so I couldn’t shoot anything for Sports Illustrated as we always shoot RAW files.

They say there are no second acts in Hollywood but there clearly are in the world of digital cameras. Less than six months after releasing the much-hyped but often criticized PEN EP-1 digital camera, Olympus has followed up that model with the EP-2 ($1099) which features an articulating electronic viewfinder, a new autofocus tracking feature, and a black paint job.

The just released Canon S90 presses all of the right buttons, (so to speak). It is currently the world’s smallest and lightest shirt-pocket-sized (SPS) camera that shoots raw. It has an almost 4X zoom (28–105mm equivalent) and has a remarkable f/2 as its widest aperture at the wide end of its range. There is, of course, optical image stabilization, a full 3″ LCD screen, as well as a built-in pop-up flash.
